Not all abrasive media is created equal. The production rates, surface profile yield, recyclability and other performance characteristics can vary widely, even within a given generic type of abrasive. As part of KTA’s Physical Testing Laboratory, KTA laboratory technicians perform abrasive media testing services to independently evaluate the physical and performance characteristics of blast cleaning abrasive media. Since KTA is independent of the facility owner, contractor and abrasive supplier, the analysis of abrasive properties is without bias. Testing procedures include: particle size distribution (sieve analysis), breakdown and dust generation rates, cleaning and consumption rates, embedment quantification, surface profile generation and peak density measurements, optimum blast pressure testing, chemical contamination on abrasive and surfaces, oil content, conductivity, hardness, specific gravity, moisture content, total silica content, coating performance over a variety of prepared surfaces(SSPC-SP5, SP10, SP6), quantification of airborne respirable fraction, assessment of airborne metals generated during abrasive blast cleaning, effects of dust suppressants on abrasive performance and resulting surfaces, microphotography of abrasive and resulting surface, and photographic documentation of testing procedures. Abrasive testing is performed in KTA’s fully equipped, weather controlled shop that includes a walk-in blast room equipped with a dust collection system. Breakdown and dust generation rates are determined using a specially-designed abrasive breakdown chamber.
KTA has demonstrated such services on the following representative projects:
