Paint Inspection Services

KTA provides many different types of quality control and quality assurance inspection services to industry, from simple, part-time and full-time inspection to complete contract management.

KTA pioneered the independent, 3rd party coating inspection industry in 1961. Prior to that, QA/QC inspection was often performed by parties who had conflicting interests on a job site, such as a paint manufacturer or painting contractor. With KTA's new service, structure and facility owners could hire an independent expert to verify that surface preparation and application procedures were being followed correctly.

Now, almost 40 years later, KTA is still regarded as the foremost technical expert when it comes to coating inspection. In addition, we continue to offer industry leading services to help our clients have safer, more cost-effective and successful painting projects.

Below you will find descriptions of our core offerings in Inspection Services:

Contract Administration

KTA's Contract Management service involves the placement of a KTA project manager on a jobsite to act as the owner's representative during new or maintenance painting. He or she acts as the liaison between the owner and the contractor to coordinate all major parts of the work effort. This allows the owner to be in control of his plant painting program while spending as much or as little time as desired on daily activities.

In-Process Coating Application Inspection

Experienced KTA inspectors work at jobsites to assure that the entire coating project from ambient conditions and surface preparation through final coating dry film thickness and curing are correct and in accordance with the specification and good painting practice.

The inspectors are equipped with all of the necessary field instrumentation to provide thorough surveillance. Comprehensive documentation is prepared daily detailing job quality and progress. This close oversight enables the inspectors to identify potential problems and recommend solutions before the work progresses to a point where costly rework is required.

KTA has considerable inspection experience in both fabrication shops and the field. Field work includes structural steel, tank interiors and exteriors, ships, bridges, pipelines, and entire chemical and nuclear facilities.

While all inspectors are certified by a formal program in accordance with ASTM D4537 "Inspection Personnel for Coating Work in Nuclear Facilities, Establishing Procedures to Qualify and Certify" (formerly ANSI N45.2.6 "Qualification of Inspection, Examination, andTesting Personnel for the Construction Phase of Nuclear Power Plants"), virtually all KTA inspectors are also trained and qualified in accordance with programs established and presented by NACE International (NACE International Coating Inspector Training and Certification Program - NICITCP).

Enhanced Inspection Services

On most coatings projects, a qualified coating inspection company performs the on-site coatings inspection, while a different company provides the necessary oversight in environmental health and safety.

KTA-Tator, Inc. has revolutionized coatings inspection by providing selected individuals who are experienced in both painting inspection and worker and environmental compliance oversight.

KTA's Enhanced Inspection Service, EIS for short, offers a single-source, third party verification of the implementation of all contractor quality control efforts and programs to protect adjacent workers, the public, the environment, and to provide management of waste systems.

So what is the benefit to you?

  • Minimizes costs: One highly-trained professional EIS inspector replaces up to three inspectors on a job site.
  • Limits liability: Independent verification of environmental compliance issues.
  • Minimizes work disruption: Limits contract disputes through an integrated EIS approach to project management. The contractor interfaces with only one individual for coatings inspection and enviornmental oversight instead of multiple persons.
  • Enhances coatings performance: Increases the likelihood of longer coatings performance through rigorous independent inspection and documentation.

So how qualified are these EIS inspectors anyway?

EIS inspectors must meet the following requirements:

  • Average of 2 years of undergraduate college education
  • Over 10 years of experience in the construction/coatings industry
  • Minimum NACE Intermediate (Level II) training
  • SSPC Certification as a Supervisor/Competent Person for Industrial Deleading Projects
  • 20-hour OSHA Construction Hazard Awareness training
  • 32 hours of advanced coatings, project management, and dispute resolution training.

KTA possesses one of the largest staff of NACE Certificated inspectors of any private firm in the industry.
