Quality Control of Shop Painting Operations (2 days)

Many facility owners are specifying one-, two-, even three-coat systems to be applied in the shop. A survey of steel bridge fabricators revealed that 100% of the shops surveyed consider paint to be the most costly item for them. Comments included, “Cure times create bottlenecks, handling is expensive, blast cleaning to SSPC-SP10 is difficult, and edge preparation is time consuming and expensive.”

To assist shops in the successful performance of coating operations, KTA offers a two-day, American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) sanctioned Sophisticated Paint Endorsement (SPE) training curriculum. This curriculum also meets the training requirements for shops seeking SSPC QP3 certification. This course is provided at the client’s facility through private contract.

Course content includes:

• Prerequisites to surface preparation
• Protective coating types common to the shop
• Surface preparation and inspection requirements
• Coating application in the shop
• Conditions for curing and curing mechanisms
• Hands-On use of quality control instruments for the inspection of surface preparation and coating application operations

Note: For the shop already certified by AISC or SSPC, KTA offers a one-day refresher training for coatings quality control personnel. Contact the KTA training manager to schedule a refresher at your shop.
