Basic Course: Coatings Inspection
(Available as an open-registration course or through private contract. Eligible for 2 IACET CEUs)

Today's high performance coating systems demand close scrutiny during every phase of an industrial coatings operation. From the mixing and thinning of the products, to the measurement of ambient conditions, to the testing of the substrate for cleanliness and roughness, to proper application, compliance with the specification and the best use of time, product, and manpower are critical. Over-inspection can impede progress, while inadequate inspection can cause costly rework, even premature coatings failure. Understanding what to inspect, when to inspect, and how to inspect is a crucial part of every coatings operation.

Course content includes:

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

KTA's basic inspection course offers three days of intensive, interactive training for inspectors, contractors, engineers, facility owners, and all those responsible for quality control or quality assurance during industrial surface preparation and coating application operations. This training provides an excellent mix of hands-on experiments, problem-solving workshops, lectures, and discussions on inspection issues that range from surface preparation to coating failures.

Hands-on workshops comprise approximately one-third of the course, and include: abrasive blast cleaning, power tool cleaning, coating application, and inspection instrument usage. This course fulfills the training requirements for the following: AISC Sophisticated Paint Endorsement (SPE), SSPC QP1 and QP3 painting contractor certification programs, and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Quality Control Specialist (QCS).

Successful Course Completion and the Award of 2 CEUs:

To successfully complete the course and be awarded 2 IACET CEUs (the International Association of Continuing Education and Training, Continuing Education Units), a participant must attend all instruction-led sessions, participate fully in all activities, complete all assignments, complete a written evaluation of the course, and score a 75% or better on the final, fifty question objective test. For participants meeting all requirements, but receiving a score lower than 75% on the final test, a certificate of attendance will be issued, but no CEUs will be awarded. Special mentoring/review sessions are available to participants.

Two manuals ("Basic Coatings Inspection" and “Using Coatings Inspection Instruments, 2nd Edition”) are included with the course tuition.
