History of the Lining System

The use of high-performance linings in FGD systems to solve corrosion and abrasion issues has proven effective for most power utilities. Being available in a variety of different formulations, linings today offer outstanding corrosion and abrasion resistance as well as being able to withstand high temperatures found in cleaning and flue gas exhaust applications such as:

Scrubber modules/Stacks - below 200 degrees F, low pH
Ductwork - between 275 degrees F and 375 degrees F, highly acidic
Make-up water tanks/FGD system bleed tanks - many corrosion and abrasion requirements
Precipitators - between 275 degrees F and 375 degrees F, highly acidic

The Benefit of Utilizing KTA on a Project

Lining systems must be carefully chosen - pH, temperature, abrasion are important characteristics. KTA engineers have decades of experience in specifying, testing, inspecting, and conducting failure investigations of lining systems.

Specifically, KTA can write specifications and inspection procedures, plan and conduct laboratory test protocols, perform in-process and hold-point inspection services, and conduct forensic investigations into lining system failures.

KTA is a consulting engineering firm founded in 1949 specializing in protective coatings and linings. The KTA Consulting Group consists of Professional Engineers, chemists, environmental specialists, SSPC Certified Protective Coatings Specialists, and NACE Certified Coatings Inspectors who are available to serve various key functions throughout the life of a project. KTA Consultants not only have years of technical experience within the industry but also actively participate in related professional societies. Consultants contribute technical articles, make presentations, and hold leadership positions on industry committees. This results in a knowledge base that is innovative, resourceful and up-to-date.

Why KTA? For over 55 years, KTA has gained an industry reputation for delivering consulting engineering expertise and quality control for coatings technology.

KTA General Services to the Power Industry

Comprehensive Coatings Failure Analysis – KTA senior consultants conduct site visits to resolve questions or disputes regarding the quality of surface preparation or coating application. They also make coating repair or repainting recommendations, and determine the cause of coating failures. Field work can include comprehensive measurements of coating dry film thickness, microscopic examinations of coating continuity and integrity, evaluations of the underlying substrate for the quality of cleaning, and evaluations for possible environmental degradation of the system. Samples for a detailed laboratory analysis are removed if necessary. Typical jobsite visits require one day for each project, including photographic documentation and recommendations.

Laboratory Services – The Company maintains a well-equipped physical testing and analytical laboratory, which includes such instrumentation as a GC, IC, HPLC, GC-MS, SEM/EDS, DSC, FTIR (including ATR), AA/AE, a Tinius Olsen Universal Testing Machine, optical microscopes with microphotography capabilities, and complete wet bench chemistry facilities. Accelerated testing equipment in the KTA laboratory includes salt fog and humidity cabinets, immersion tanks, Atlas cells, QUV, KTA’s patented Envirotest, a cyclic corrosion chamber (Q-Fog cabinet) for Prohesion testing, ultraviolet light chambers, abrasion, cathodic disbonding apparatus, and others.

Indoor Blast Cleaning and Painting Facility - KTA has an indoor walk-in blast cleaning room and airless and conventional spray painting facilities suitable for training and application of all types of coatings. The Company also maintains a complete supply of test panels and test racks.

In-Process Inspections – Experienced KTA inspectors work at jobsites to observe and document that the entire coating project from ambient conditions and surface preparation through final coating dry film thickness and curing to verify that results are in accordance with the specification and good painting practice. The inspectors are fully equipped with all of the necessary field instrumentation to provide thorough surveillance. Comprehensive documentation is prepared daily detailing job quality and progress. This close oversight enables the inspectors to identify potential problems and recommend solutions before the work progresses to a point where costly rework is required.

In September 2001, KTA became the first firm to be certified under SSPC QP-5 “Standard Procedure for Evaluating the Qualifications of Coatings and Lining Inspection Companies.”

Virtually all KTA inspectors are trained and qualified in accordance with programs established and presented by NACE International (NACE International Coating Inspector Training and Certification Program – NICITCP). Some inspectors are also certified by a formal program in accordance with ASTM D4537 “Inspection Personnel for Coating Work in Nuclear Facilities, Establishing Procedures to Qualify and Certify” (formerly ANSI N45.2.6 “Qualification of Inspection, Examination, and Testing Personnel for the Construction Phase of Nuclear Power Plants”).

Steel Inspection Services – KTA provides full shop inspection services, including all fitting, welding, grinding, CWI and NDT, in addition to blast cleaning and painting operations. Services include the utilization of KTA’s trained staff of experienced fabrication shop inspection employees who are certified in accordance with the applicable American Welding Society (AWS), American Society for Non-Destructive Testing (ASNT) (UT, RT, VT, MT, PT), and, where appropriate, all state DOT/DOH requirements. A number of these inspectors are also trained and certified at various levels by NACE.

Coatings Inspection Instruments - KTA stocks and sells a complete line of coatings inspection equipment and standards, as a distributor for leading manufacturers and organizations throughout the world. By purchasing equipment through KTA, customers enjoy the convenience of one-stop shopping for all of the inspection instrumentation used through the coating process. Customers are provided with quality control and traceability of instruments and standards, certificate of compliance, full guarantees, calibration and repair services, and same-day shipping (www.ktagage.com).
