Indoor Air Quality Survey

In response to complaints at a college facility, KTA was contracted to conduct a survey to determine if there were indoor air quality conditions present which could be potential causes of the complaints. The complaints consisted of odor, headaches, and shortness of breath.

KTA's investigation of occupant complaints included interviews with building occupants and maintenance staff, visual evaluations for potential sources of indoor air quality problems (i.e., mold growth and the conditions of HVAC system components including fans and air intakes), evaluation of HVAC system operations (i.e., operating cycles, thermostat settings and observations of airflow patterns using tracer smoke), and measurement of environmental conditions (i.e., temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide).

Following the survey, a final report was presented documenting the survey results and corrective actions to address indoor air quality deficiencies. Findings included improper operation of the ventilation system and chemical spillage in the laboratory facility. For example, opening of doors and windows caused cross drafts that prevented the ventilation system for the laboratory from effectively capturing vapors generated by laboratory activities.

Corrective actions recommended consisted of keeping doors and windows closed and suggesting that Building Maintenance Department look at the performance of the ventilation system. The ventilation system performance could be improved by inspecting the ductwork and motor and making repairs as necessary.
